From the Earth to the Moon


I am a child of the 60’s and 70’s. I was born on Long Island, New York and raised there during that turbulent era. It was a time filled with the desire for peace and the search for love. It was a time when the United States was at a crossroads. It was also the time of many of my fondest memories. In fact, the period from 1968-1975 was a time that shaped the future of the United States.

It was the last time the country was in great turmoil. We were deeply into the worst part of the Vietnam War. The country was split in two over many decisions made in that war. It was very hard to watch the news every night and see our soldiers dying in Vietnam and being ridiculed back home in the United States. The war demonstrations were happening and being televised daily.

It was also the last time there was a constitutional crisis in our country. It was the closest the country ever came to an internal revolution. The crisis peaked with the Watergate Scandal in which Richard Nixon was forced to become the first and only president to resign the office in August, 1974 (which by the way was the first year of Saturday Night Live). President Nixon abused power and paid the price.

However, the price the country was forced to pay because of Nixon’s indiscretions was the election of the worst president the country has ever seen, Jimmy Carter. When Mr. Carter left office in 1981, the economy was in shambles and our international policy was considered a joke. But, that is the topic of a possible future column.

For now, I want to talk a little bit about 1969. Forty-one years ago. Hard to imagine, but that’s how long ago it really was. 1969 was the year of many firsts. It was one of the greatest years to be a New Yorker. It was one of the greatest years to be an American.

It was the year of the first and only Jets’ Super Bowl win; the year of Joe Namath’s guarantee. It was the year of the first New York Knicks’ NBA title; the year of Walt Frazier, Willis Reed, and soon to be Senator Bill Bradley. And, it was the year of the New York Mets’ first World Series Championship: The year that those of us who are Mets’ fans will never forget.

The Mets won the World Series again in 1986, but it did not have the emotion and impact of 1969. 1986 was not the year of Tommie Agee, Cleon Jones, Don Clendenon, Bud Harrelson, Jerry Koosman and one of the greatest pitchers of all time Tom Seaver. It was a dream come true as a New Yorker for former Brooklyn Dodger first baseman Gil Hodges to lead the hapless Mets to that 1969 championship.

It was also the year of Woodstock; what some people call the end of the hippie era. The three day festival of music and love in upstate New York started as a simple rock concert and turned into a legendary event that has since become the Mecca that every rock extravaganza tries to emulate.

It was a truly wonderful year to be a New Yorker.

And, it was a wonderful year to be an American.

It was the year of Apollo 11. There is not one person alive on that July date that does not remember Neil Armstrong stepping his foot onto the lunar surface and uttering those immortal lines:

“This is one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind.”
And, it was. As most of you know, I am in Thailand prepping a feature film to be directed by Prachya Pinkaew. Just yesterday Prachya and I were talking and the Apollo missions came up. Prachya told me that in Thailand there was no school on that July day except for the students to watch the lunar landing on TV. It was truly an international event.

Since that July 1969 day, man has gone to the moon 5 more times. The last of which was Apollo 17 in December 1972. In the 38 years since, we have not returned. I often wonder why? It took us eight years to get there the first time. Why is it taking so long to get there a second time?

For those of us that were alive on that July, 1969 day, it will never be forgotten. Those under 40 were not there and cannot understand what I am relating. They have no recollection of the heroes that were the astronauts; of the great pride in being American; of the wonder of going outside and seeing the moon and knowing that we had placed someone there. We put men on the moon six times and returned them safely. No other country has ever accomplished it. No other country has ever tried. Tom Hanks came close to showing the emotion attached to that achievement in the HBO miniseries, “From the Earth to the Moon.” But, he only came close. You had to live it; to experience it. You had to be there.

Just last week, President Obama gave his State of the Union Address. A speech that was uninspired and really proves that this is a man without ideas: a man who was elected to a position that he is unqualified to hold. He is a man lost in the complexity of his vision and his ambition. Thus far, he is a failure.

Today, President Obama is releasing his budget for the next fiscal year. A budget that proposes the largest deficit in the history of the United States: 1.6 trillion. That’s right, trillion. According to Fox News, it is a budget that freezes discretionary spending, except for defense. It does not address the fastest growing parts of the federal budget; social security, Medicare and Medicaid. It leaves them to grow unabated along with the deficit.

However, it does address one issue. It scraps NASA’s plan to return to the moon. According to the cited CBS News article, http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/07/17/tech/cnettechnews/main5168126.shtml, NASA had planned to go the moon by 2020 and set up a permanent base there to be used for missions to Mars and beyond. Imagine that, we were going to bring that glory back to our country.

Upon hearing this last year, my childhood memories of the Apollo Astronauts and the entire space program came back. The national pride came back. The desire for scientific knowledge came back. We were going to continue our search to the stars.

The CBS article is a good primer for all of the reasons to go back to the Moon and to continue space exploration. I will not repeat most of them, but I will say that the expense is worth it. It is worth it in more than national pride. It is a real stimulus package. It will create jobs. It will create new technological advancements. And, it will do so over a number of states. The beginnings of the program are already active in 11 different states.

So, I say to President Obama, if you have any vision; if you want to be remembered for something other than your failures; if you want to do something right, then echo the immortal words of John F. Kennedy:


“We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win. . .”

So, President Obama, while you still have a chance to save your failing presidency, do you have the guts to challenge America in such a way? Do you have the guts to have such a vision? Do you have the guts to show any love for the country you lead?

Great article Frank. I, like all Americans, was glued to my TV that day when those fuzzy images of Neil Armstrong captured the exact moment the first man put his mark on the moon. Those were glorious times and just shows the obvious short sightedness of the present administration.

I was born in 1972 so I missed the original missions. I have seen Tom Hanks miniseries though and I can tell you that it was very moving. I can only imagine what it was like to actually watch it unfold live. So why is the President stopping our attempts to go back to the moon? I can only think of two reasons. One, because he would rather spend that money on social programs that hook potential voters and ensure they vote democrat for the foreseeable future. The second, and I don't think we can underestimate this, is that he's doing it out of spite for the President that had the vision to actually start the current project. He already blames everything on Bush, it's pretty obvious he has no respect for the man. Imagine what might happen if the new missions to the moon succeeded, all the goodwill and praise that Kennedy gets for starting the Apollo missions would filter toward Bush and I don't think the democrats could stand that. They're doing their best to destroy Bush's legacy, why not just put a stop to anything that might make him look good too? I think liberals are petty, divisive and irresponsible and I really think that at least on some level cutting the new moon missions is about Bush and their desire to denigrate him every chance they get.

Loved your article Frank. I was as excited as you were back in 1969 about the USA landing man on the moon, and haven't understood why people don't understand the "Shooting for the stars" concept, literally or figuratively.

I still have a framed cardboard poster with a variety of pictures from the moon landing hanging on my wall and behind it a book full of more pictures.

I wanted to post my comment I guess I went to comment a different way, I hope people read this, it is very important. I should say along with so many other things right now.

If we like the Constitution and being in the top with regard to our position in the world, we cannot let this go. BUT... something tells me we will be following what ever Mr Obama says. After all the ground I thought American's covered on the subject of we do not like the proposed health care, he spent 70 minutes last Wednesday night telling us why we are going to get it, plus, and that is that he knows better than us. so he believes. He will not budge at all. He is going overboard now telling us how he is going to get to the place HE wants to be. Now what is this? What is his agenda? It seems like all that is good for us, he will disregard as not good.

I congratulate you Frank, I know you are the Republican in a Democratic sea. I used to feel I was a Republican, not so sure, I guess I am so mad at the whole deal I think we need to rename it. Or better yet not name it. That being said, I do have a Republican Ideology, free enterprise, freedom to do as we wish with our lives. If we don't make it work for the business, not so much the super business but the small to the large, this seems so obvious. Who will pay the working class if we don't have wealth and ambitious business men and women, oh wait, I almost forgot, the Government... Kool aide is served. Also a very 60s/70s thing to do, but different!

Does Obama want to take a back seat to Russia, Japan? all others on their way past us on their way to Mars?

Far as the 60s 70s, things were very different, and the time was so full of great change and advancement. Thanks for the article.

Frank as I read your thoughts "From Earth to the Moon", my heart feels so heavy. I too have these same great and proud memories of Space travel. I was there in front of the tv as was every American.

I watched all of the take off and landings. Interest faded over the past few years, it was a shame to see. Ever since they announced this new endeavor to build a permanent station on the Moon and further exploration, I was so thrilled, yes, that pride you spoke of it all came back. I started looking at Hubble Pictures from Deep Space.

When Obama in the speech said he wanted to compete with the world and to do that we have to achieve higher standards in Math and Science. Wow, great maybe we will all wake up and start a new path back to the top. No such luck, the day or two later he scraps the whole thing. WHAT? I just could not believe. I mean there are people going to space via Richard Branson and his upcoming open to the public, shuttles into space. There are other countries involved in the new stations going up to promote further travel and exploration of Mars and beyond. And we... will NOT complete with these nations, no we will fall further behind. Mr. Obama has his own Agenda, it really concerns me.
This should concern everyone.

I too have many memories of the Astronauts and NASA. I feel such injustice.

Great Article for the readers once again. But…I totally disagree. We have been to the moon several times and proved we could get there and no one else could. Based on our economy and several other things I would deem going back to the moon “A bad investment”.
We have nothing to gain and everything to lose. With people losing their homes and their jobs we don’t need to be spending money on going someplace we have already been…several times.
We live in a world now where everyone would EXPECT us to succeed where before we were the pioneers and the only country with the guts to try. Now our kids carry computers to school under their arms that are way more powerful than the one that got us there and way more dependable. THE THRILL IS GONE. It won’t make us feel the same way it did in the 60s and don’t forget...we had two space shuttle missions fail even with much more modern technology. One on the way out and one on the way back. If for some reason we failed while doing something we already did we would be a laughing stock and those other countries that are still out there that think we never even went there would start all over again claiming “If they can’t get there now…how in the Hell did they get there in the 60s”.
Could we get there…Probably? But why should we and at what cost if we failed?
As for jobs getting there…once again…why? Sure we could create lots of jobs in the process but why do that when there are more important things to spend the money on and jobs that actually accomplish something towards getting our economy back on track.
And as for the statement of us just letting Russian and China get to Mars before us too. If we want to go to Mars wasting this money on the moon will keep us from getting there.

I read your article with tears in my eyes. I was 19. My whole live was ahead of me! At the end of 69' would come the loss of the most important person in my life at that time. I have the tears for the good memories, and for the "Unqualified Failure." The unqualified failure' has twisted our entire culture and insulted us all, not to mention putting us all in harms' way! Thanks for writing this!

Bruce: This is not about going to the moon. If you read the CBS News Article, it's about building a moon base to go to Mars. It's about putting thousands of people to work. It's about building national pride.

We are the number one country in the world and we must continue to show it. China, India and the Russians are waiting for us to fail.

We must not fail. Look at Kennedy's words. As much as I don't like him, he said it best in 1962.

Bruce and Frank it is about going to the moon and Mars and beyond. We need to get off this planet if mankind is to survive. Nasa's budget to put a man back on the moon, build a base and launch a flight to Mars is about 1/10th that of the least amount of bailout money given to any bank. And Frank is also right when he say's it's about jobs,millions of jobs and about not just national pride but human pride. Of all things that could be done to bring the people's of this world together going to the moon and Mars is by far the best and the cheapest way to do it.

We could achieve national pride by feeding our own that are starving, putting money into alternate fuels so we don't rely on the middle east and not having to die when you get sick or lose all that you have. Going to the Moon will not fix that. There are plenty of jobs to had working in that direction. Also, this is a yearly budget...not a life long boycott of space exploration.

Here are a couple of things that bother me about going to the Moon in this year’s budget and our current situation.
If we went to Moon today how much national pride could we have when:
A) We have already been there
B) We would have partners sharing in the accomplishment as we would have to borrow the money to get there.
C) Ira’s said the budget for getting to the Moon, building a station there and launching a flight to Mars 1/10th that of the least amount of bailout money given to any bank. Do you plan on this coming in on or under budget? We have never done this or been to Mars…how do you or anyone else know what it will cost?
D) A huge number of the people watching the event unfold would be living with relatives or in motels as they have lost their homes.
E) Every dime spent is added debt put on our children that will pay back nothing. We have crucified this and other administrations for this and now it’s a good idea.
I share in all those memories from your blog Frank and I agree completely about how it felt and what it did for us. But the circumstances are far different “THIS YEAR”...so for ”THIS YEAR” let’s try to get OUR PLANET back on track and then go find another one later when we don’t have to borrow the money to get there…after all you can’t borrow your wa

Fantastic article Frank. I had the same reactions as you did. It is so sad but obvious as exampled by the latter comments ,why our country is in the state it is in. Sad that many people don't understand that the quest for the moon was utlimately about so much more that landing on the moon. The technologies developed certainly have helped propel our country forward. Its sad because the young people born after the moon walk have never experienced the excitemnet of the whole country looking forward together to a possitive accompolishment. It won't happen with this administration, maybe the next.

I'd hate to say this again, but some people just don't get it. Not one penny on going to the moon was spent on the moon. It was spent in Florida, Texas, California, NY and countless other places. It created jobs. Real jobs. High paying jobs. Jobs that kept people in their houses. Jobs that kept people off of bread lines. Jobs that created the integrated circuit. Jobs that created LCD's and LED's.

A large part of the technological advances that we have now come either directly or indirectly from the space program. There would be no laptops, no i-pods, etc.

This is why the space program should be funded and funded again. Stop giving out food stamps and give people jobs

That's ridiculous Frank. When you pay some one to do something that doesn't need to be done in the first place and pays you back absolutely "nothing" you are putting them in a food line. You are borrowing the money (the third time I have had to say it) and you charging that loan to their children. So they actually made nothing! Tell Avi to borrow the money to make a film and then pay everyone to work on it to create jobs. Then tell him the film is worthless and he can't sell it but still has to pay the loan back. Then convince him it was worth it because it created jobs. This is how you go broke...OH! wait we are broke! point made!!! When you convince him then you will convince me buddy.
The point being going to the money costs money...tons of it and with no payback to anyone. That type of job creation is a joke and accomplishes nothing.

Frank: your point is certainly not ridiculous. The value of the various jobs we do in our daily lives is totally subjective. Jobs created in the private sector are not a joke if they are productive and better our standard of living. I too remember the moon launch of Apollo 11 when I was in junior high. It was inspirational. And it generated too many technologies to count, including the invention of of chip technology which now drives personal computers. This country cannot remain a great nation by redistributing wealth and taking incentive away from otherwise productive people. We don't need another social program. We need enthusiasm and vision. I think that sending a few select Americans to Mars would do wonders for the rest of us.

Key words "If they are productive and better our standard of living" you are not bettering your standard when you borrow the money to pay your self and when you know the project will not make you any money back so someone else will have to pay back the money you borrowed and eventually received. That would not in any way make me feel like a productive human being and I would question a man that disagrees. Also, people with vision don't do things that add to or cause long term problems then act like they don't know how they got in the position they are in.

So basically your saying gaining knowledge does not better your life or make you feel better as a human being. Am I correct? Do you have a microwave in your house? Have you ever used velcro, are your eyeglass lenses scratch resistant, not to mention solar cells, better brakes and advanced lubricants for your car. Those are just a few of the technologies we can directly attribute to the space program. That's not to mention all the minerals and oil we could be extracting from the moon if we had established a base there 20 years ago. So saying we can't afford space exploration costs us more money in the long run. Maybe we should just slip back into the dark ages and stop spending money on all scientific research.

You are going overboard with your statement. No one is talking about slipping into the dark ages for God's sake. WE ARE BROKE!! What part of that is hard to understand? If we did come up with some new product based on what we could learn from doing this it would be made in China or Japan anyway and would just deepen the already out of control trade deficit. Our school systems are failing and are some of the worst in the world so how do think new outer space technology is going to benefit the average student. We have so much to fix before you build something new. And once again we are talking about "This year’s budget" not a lifelong decision. We are buried in debt and would have to borrow money to even attempt this and the way our Government borrows it, it is impossible to pay back. The only good reason to establish a base on the moon is because when China calls our debt in we may have to live there!
I'm not saying we should forget it all together...I'm saying for this year's budget it's irresponsible.

I understand Bruce but that's the excuse that's been used for the last 10 years. We definately need to cut spending but lets cut the waste not programs that are beneficial and can actually cause us to make money. As a result of cutting the space program we have already lost far too much, so much so Manned space programs by NASA will be a thing of the past within 3 to 5 years. The shuttles will be mothballed in September and we have no american lifting vehicles to replace them. Budget cuts don't ya know. We'll be hitching rides with the russians for 50 million per astronaut per launch. Do the math...in one year well have paid the russians more than the three year projected budget for NASA. This isn't something you can stop for a year then just pick it up where you left off. Either you keep it going or you close shop and go home.

Sorry to jump in so late- but this Bruce totally disagrees with anonymous bruce. Barry O has providedmoney for trains no one wants in florida, tunnels for turtles and the like in his 780 billion porkulas bill but nothing for man's greatest acheivement- the moon. I was born in the early 50's so I was at an age whn I could appreciate Armstrong and all who followed him. Eugene Cernin wrote a great book about the space progam entitled" last man on the moon" . All the naysayers should read it before criticizing the space program. Obama cancelling the space program in favor of Pelosi's jet and booze, and his gourmet chefs from Food Network just floors me- Obama inspirational? Not.

I'm not saying that Obama's "jet and booze" etc is right either...they are two different points entirely. So one doesn't make the other right or wrong.
Saying something else is wrong doesn't have anything to do with this. Stick to the issue.
And this is not 1960 and the situation is totally different. You talk about scrapping the space race when I'm talking about a year and you say if we lay off a year we may as well give up. Then you compare us to the soviets? They took more than a year off when they had to so why are they ahead of us or even close if your statement it true?

OK...let me add. Obama's quote "line by line" evaluation of the budget didn't work out the way I hoped it would. And I will give you this...I feel that there are several things that should have been cut out of the budget and several things that should have stayed.
I am surprised though that none of you brought up Helium 3 in the debate. Not that I think our crooked government would ever let us profit from it but its there!

Because after september they will still be able to put people in space we will not without help. That's why. Then what happens next year when we're still in the hole or the year after that. This country has a lousy record when it comes to restarting stalled programs. Most of the time they don't or if they do it's never as good as it was. We need to be in space permanently, not if the budget allows.

Wow, lot's of good (and heartfelt) commentary on your article! Like several others, I was a starry-eyed 12-year-old when Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. I was convinced then that I wanted to be an astrophysicist! Didn't quite make it, but I still believe you are right: our nation needs a visionary goal that takes us beyond our petty problems and focuses our attention on a common challenge. But a challenge that is transcendent; not simply staving off "global warming" or fixing social security.

I like how you termed our nations problems "petty". I have to say that's what got us here men. They are anything but "petty".
Actually I am very surprised Obama pulled the funding. This tells me he believes he will not be re-elected. If he thought for a second that we would achieve those goals during his term or terms he would use the opportunity to plaster his own face all over every thing you saw for the next 10 years and would never let you forget that he was the guy that got us back to the moon and beyond.
The fact he pulled funding tells me he thinks that by the time it all transpired he would already be history...Just a thought though.

You're absolutely right on all points BC. He will be a one term president and that will be the only good thing to come out of his presidency. Hopefully he takes Pelosi and Reid with him.
