A Hollywood Republican

This blog is for an open discussion on politics. My views will be to the right as will be most of the posters. But, we are willing to post alternative viewpoints as lons as they are well thought out. I started this in response to the Obama election and will continue it as long as it feeds a need.

Well the healthcare “summit” is over and between you and me I probably could have found a better use for my time then sitting in front of my TV and watching it. However we did learn several things from this media event. The Republicans are not dead but are rather quite alive and feisty and despite what President Obama has said he has no interest what so ever in working with the Republicans on healthcare. Watching the President yesterday was like watching a spoiled brat who owned the only baseball telling the rest of the kids you either play by my rules or you don’t play at all.

I was surprised to hear him admit that the American people were angry at Washington but then I realized he might have said it but clearly didn’t believe it. This point was driven home later when the President told the Republicans and I’m paraphrasing, that they had six weeks to get on board or the Democrats will pass the bill without them. The dreaded reconciliation. Though the bill would probably pass the Senate most analysts believe it will not get out of the House. His flippant remark regarding the elections in November, “Whatever happens in November happens in November” (paraphrasing again) shows how really out of touch this administration really is. One of the Democrats even had the audacity to say that they (Democrats) have been doing this a long time and they know what we’re doing. Well a new Rasmussen poll indicates 56% of the population disagrees.

Now that the debate is over we need to put this all in perspective. Everyone agrees that insurance companies must not be allowed to continue doing business as usual. Regulations need to be put in place to prevent things like the 39% rate increase Anthem Blue Cross of California just inflicted on its policy holders. Both the federal government and the California Insurance commissioner have asked Anthem to explain the increase. As of today they have yet to answer. Things like this cannot be allowed to continue. The Insurance companies need to be reigned in and made accountable for their actions. They have made huge profits on the backs of their policy holders and healthcare providers and still scream poverty. California State Attorney General, Jerry Brown, subpoenaed yesterday, the financial records for the seven largest health insurance companies doing business in California. They have 30 days to comply. It appears at least one state is looking out for its citizens.

Our present healthcare system is one of the best in the world. Better equipment has lead to early detection of most deadly diseases. Early detection means a better chance of survival. Access to this early detection and treatment is possible only because of our present healthcare system. And it appears most of us are happy with our present plans.

A recent gallop poll indicates that 87% of Americans with health insurance are happy with their plans. 82% of people on Medicare and Medicaid also say their healthcare coverage is good to excellent. According to CNN 15% of all Americans, roughly 45 million presently don’t have any health insurance. That’s 1 in 8 Americans. According to the US Census Bureau of those 45 million 9.7 million are not citizens of the United States. The CBO (Congressional Budget Office) reports another 14 million are insurable through Medicare and SCHIP but didn’t bother to enroll. The Census also shows 18.3 million are under the age of 34 and most of that number feels they don’t need or want health insurance. So when all is said and done it is estimated that only 8.3 million Americans are too poor to afford health coverage.

So it appears the real problem isn’t getting insurance that is good, the problem is getting good insurance that is affordable. As I said our healthcare system is one of the best in the world and doesn’t need massive restructuring to make it work better. All it needs is a major “tweaking” and rules to make sure the rights of those of us who have policies are protected. If the Democrats would simply open their eyes and ears and look and listen to what the people are saying they would know that too. If they continue on this path of government run health insurance they will all, like lemmings, follow each other off the cliff.

So I guess when you look at it the Democrats really don’t know what they’re talking about.

The figures in this article were obtained from “The Myth of the 46 Million” by Philip Klein

The foundation to restoring honor to an individual’s word is to “Say what you mean and mean what you say.” Sir Walter Scott framed with precision our current moral culture with “Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.” And when this fraudulent discipline is practiced at the highest level of our governance, we become lulled to sleep with the dissident consonance of lies masquerading as the truth.

Unions solved employer abuse and then corrupted their mission and goal with lies, greed, dishonor and the insidious pursuit of power. It would take an unsustainable $100 trillion to fund the unfunded national pensions and entitled healthcare. There are only two options, creative destruction or crashing. Our crisis is not simply economic; it is a crisis of national character. One must make the hard decision or live with the consequences. Our political class, almost without exception, needs to be reacquainted with an adult relationship with the ‘truth.”

The Democrats have embraced a corrupted version of moral responsibility (progressivism). The Republicans have abdicated fiscal responsibility, their stewardship of conservatism. Recovery will not be without pain. And honor will not be restored without term limits.

There is no constitutional “right” to healthcare, housing or a handout. America however is a kind, gentle noble nation, just research our charitable contributions. Having said this, a consensus of the HealthCare Reform Summit of 2/25/10 could have been a plan to make a contract with America on HealthCare Reform. It could have been a pledge for a series of single issue bills, each no more than 100 pages (a restriction on congressional malfeasance). The apparent consensus issues would cover tort reform, tackling waste, fraud and corruption in Medicare/Medicaid, portable healthcare coverage for existing medical conditions, access to insurance across state lines, and emergency/catastrophic health care safety net for the indigent (already exists….“the emergency room”).

Predictably it was not to happen. The evil in most congressional bills is primarily lusting after insidious control, blind partisanship, ego, pork, the expansion of bureaucratic commissions, death panels and taxes, real or disguised as penalties or fees. If ObamaCare fails it may rank as one of the greatest gift to America since our Declaration of Independence. Why? Without it, that historical declaration is moot. We would have just freed ourselves from one dictatorship, the British Government, only to embrace another, American progressivism.

A good country will fix its mistakes. A great country will learn from its mistakes. The ObamaCare debate reminds one of banging their head against a wall and complaining about the pain. Has the White House learned from its mistakes? Probably not, as our government elites have perfected that lack of any adult relationship with the ‘truth.”

There is purpose to blame and hold a post mortem. The closure is burial. Success is built on positive engagement, ideas for going forward, and a faith in the American spirit to “overcome.”

A universal fundamental fallacy is looking to the “elites” for leadership. Leadership is not individuality; it is the soul of the collective producing results and performance. Who is out front is like an Olympic Gold Medalist, they are not Nobel anointed; they are the product of self and opportunity. They are the fruits of a people, of a culture.

America has deconstructed its manufacturing base and defaulted innovation and entrepreneurship to China, India and Brazil. Research “Generation Zero”, a documentary that chronicles how we got here. Focus on our move away from decentralization, voluntarism, coexistence with a moral work ethic, and a partnership with local governments.

Ben Franklin, if he were alive, might have looked at the Democrats and Republicans and in disgust addressed the populous with a sweeping inclusion of both parties, ‘The British are coming.”

This is my second attempt at commenting to this, in frustration I will try again.
As you know Ira I work in this industry daily, often 7 days a week. I work for one of the top two hospital corporations in our country. My own personal plan afforded to me through my job has such an increase on both premiums and deductibles this year that it has become cost prohibitive to utilize it. Sadly I have serious conditions, including the dreaded C word which requires annual procedures and I have already decided I will not undergo this year, much to my doctor's dismay. It has literally become a matter of financial survival. It's one thing to attempt to keep a grip on my health, it's entirely another if it means I might not have the financial wherewithal to afford a place to live.
Mine is not an isolated case but rather the norm. I see it firsthand every single day when critical procedures are denied for patients from both the private industry and medicare.

As to your poll numbers, when was the last time you saw anything positive coming from Rasmussen regarding a democrat, ANY democrat for that matter? Who would you think were the participants in that study? The independents or democrats who know if they attempt to visit their site they see there is never a middle ground there? The Gallup poll highlighting people's anger is right on but not necessarily for the reasons one might think. We're all fed-up to the hilt with partisan posturing and re-election efforts rather than addressing the real issues we are BEGGING them to give credence to ON BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE!!! Most of us don't care which party one might be affiliated with but what results can they produce for us for the benefit and well-being of all?

Lastly, please don't cite census data to substantiate your claims.
Everyone with a brain knows that data is ten years old and not at all reflective of the true reality today. Besides the issue is no longer about the uninsured it's about all of us who are tired of paying for something which is becoming less and less of a benefit to us each year at renewal time.

Good post Ira! Folks will not benefit from any of these lying bills! The overreaching government plans will destroy our system. Does it need help? Yes! Does it need more of these massive travesty bills edicts? NO! What we need is 1 bill for 1 purpose at a time, and well thought out, and tons less wording! But the Democrats never intended to work with any other side. They are convinced they are the tell all! They are the true "Animal Farm" story and they will destroy us, an those that support their sick twisted policies will not see its destructive nature until they are under its THUMB!

Since the other commentors so far are simply posting under anonymous I am forced to affix a number to them in order to reply to them. Anonymous I, there is much in your comment which I can align myself to, a surprising fact on this site for me. One statement which bears correction is the "emergency/catastrophic" benefit available to all through our emergency rooms you speak of. That is a blatant falsehood. Anyone can be turned away if their condition is not deemed life-threatening. The percentages of individuals who frequent our emergency room with life-threatening illnesses are few and far between. The maladies run the gambit from broken bones and migraines to flu symptoms. The local doctors will refuse to make an appointment if you don't have coverage. Many of the current health care plans are so poor that even they are being rejected by the physicians. Also if we expect the hospitals to bear the financial burden for the uninsured or underinsured how long do you think those institutions can survive knowing that the majority of patients they care for represent a compromise to their profit/loss statements. Lest we not forget that their are those of us who depend on the financial stability of our employers.

Anonymous II I would daresay if this President walked on water your reply would be something akin to "What?, He can't swim??" We need solutions not rhetoric and I, for one, am damned sick and tired of partisan hacks. Divisiveness serves no one and actually harms everyone. Great minds talk about ideas, small minds talk about other people. I'll sit back and wait for your ideas now.

Compared to what??? George Bush, HELL YES!! Given that he has an opposition party who is opposing ANYTHING being brought forth good, bad or indifferent along with the mess he walked through the door with, I’d say he deserves a great big E for effort. Could he do better? HELL YES!! One man alone cannot solve all of our woes. Instead of worrying about the tea party movement or Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin, who by the way are insignificant twits, all parties in DC need to have their noses to the grindstone offering ideas and solutions towards a better resolve. At the very least, ACT like you care about this country and the American people. I have become so disgusted with the whole mess up there I would consider relinquishing my citizenship and moving to Italy. I’m tired of the big corporations winning and everyone else being squirted on.

Deb: I'll ask one more question and please don't take it personally. If you would rather move to Italy, do you think they have it any better? Or, are you just so enamored of European styly socialism that you would rather have it instead of a system that awards individual achievement over governmental handouts?

One would suspect that the current issue of this blog had weaknesses that needed some shoring up. Is it possible that a valid disagreement stoops to the fallacy of justifying one bad argument with another? When you directly or indirectly practice the politics of personal destruction, was that not the intent, or just lazy debating, in sending her to Italy without wrestling with her valid discontent, you expose a weakness in our culture. And I know you all to be honorable individuals, but this was a little shabby. Reject the argument by exposing the facts and countering her hypothesis, not her travel arrangements. . Italy may be worse but that does not weaken her argument. Look inward gentlemen, this blog is, in fact, getting better, despite a stumble here and there. You are finally engaging the opposing. Believe it or not, that is a gift. She has honored you by exposing weaknesses every argument has. Embrace them and grow.

For the very first time on this blog I find myself almost speechless. I've always respected those who post here and while I disagreed with many of the perspectives, I appreciated their engagement. It was very clear others didn't feel the same way about what I posted and so I just stopped coming here. Anonymous, whoever you may be, I salute you. The importance here isn't as much about the differences we all harbor but rather our ability to look beyond our own views and at least listen to another's. Really listen! We may walk away unwavered in our convictions but we should never turn a blind eye toward another human being because they think differently than we do.
If I'm not mistaken this is exactly the problem with the current administration according to this very blog writer. How dare they??? There's an old addage which goes as follows: "When two people always agree only one of them is doing all the thinking." I will always do my own thinking and when I find a welcome place to do so, might even share those thoughts with others.

Frank;
To answer your question, my prior sentence regarding moving to Italy had less to do with their political system and everything to do with ours currently

If I may take the liberty to add one more comment. When we cease to listen to others we cease to grow as an individual. We already know what we think therefore the opportunity to learn anything new becomes non-existent.

When you look at the mess Europe is in on the whole, that statement simply doesn't make any sense. I'm sorry I took it out on you. The last time I heard it was a certain celebrity saying that if Obama didn't win the election, she would move to Italy (coincidence). In the last six months no one has heard a peep out of her.

Frank replace the word "Italy" with "anyplace else". I understand some are upset right now with the goings-on in DC. What disappoints me so is how they are choosing to show their discord. We, as a society, have undergone many trying times and probably have many more to come in our future. Will we survive them? Undoubtedly. What makes this time so different than any other? This time it is okay to show up at Presidential ralleys openly bearing arms, carrying signs with disgusting depictions of our President, calling him a liar openly in the chambers of congress, tossing around accusations, some of which I have never heard or seen before which should cause us great shame as a society. What has happened to us? Disagree yes, do so in an uncivilized or inhumane way, NO! Have we stooped so low in this country that dignity, respect and honor are no longer qaulities we aspire to harbor? I've never seen the likes of what I am seeing now and I pray daily that I never will again. Our children are watching, absorbing and learning, god help them all in the future. I always took exception when many in other countries labeled us the "ugly Americans" and today they are absolutely right. It's not pretty here at all and I'd rather be anyplace else as a result.

Deb...how people show their discord is up to the individual. The constitution places no restriction on it with the exception of violence. And if I'm notmistaken even that is allowed in certain circumstances. The discord you are talking about has been around since before the American Revolution where they would hang and then burn dummies representing the opposing politicians. This is nothing new. Infact things got so bad in the post revoulutionary congress all firearms had to be left at the door. This is democracy at it's best and worst and the only thing ugly about is is the way our present politicians treat the American people. Obama does not command any respect as a man...the President of the United States...the office is what demands respect but that respect is still listed below the rights of the people to voice their dissatisfaction. And that list of dissent includes increasing numbers of democrats, liberals and moderates. So you don't like Rasmussen okay Gallop puts his popularity @ 50% and USA Today puts him @ 55%..both are below W. Bushs approval rating. And I hope our children are watching because this is how democracy works. Jefferson said it best..."When the people fear the government it is called tyranny but when the government fears the people it is called democracy." It's time our government started fearing us.

Ira;
Your numbers related to Bush were when the people were behind his war efforts. They were blinded by vengeance over 911. Let's talk about his approval rating months before his exit. The numbers teetered from the high teens to the low twentys. That's an approval rating to be ashamed of matching. 55% tells me that still a majority of Americans support him in spite of the myriad of false and inflammatory accusations being floated by those who have opposed him on the day he announced he was running for the office.

Since the day I became politically aware I have always hollered about holding our political officials accountable on all levels. NOW you say "It's time"!! Where were you over all those years when our government decided it was okay to risk our young soldiers lives and involve ourselves in a war in the middle east? Please don't argue that what was done to us on 9/11 warranted such action. The hard core truth is that 9/11 happened because we angered Osama Bin Laden and his followers when Bush Sr. took our troops over there in the gulf war and fought on "holy ground". He vowed then to retaliate for that action and that is exactly what he did.
So please don't tell me people are just exercising the democratic rights. As I said in an email to you on Saturday, under G.W. Bush it was deemed unpatriotic to criticize the administration. Under this administration folks are jockeying for best of show, with much of the criticisms being ladened with lies and misinformation in an attempt to rile and anger the populace. 55% says it's not working very well, doesn't it?

March 2, 2010 at 11:33 AM
Anonymous Ira said...

First of all I've been around protesting since vietnam. I was not in favor of the second war in the middle east anymore than I am in favor of what is happening now in Afghanistan. I never was a fan of Bush and voted against him both times. The fact that Obama's approval rating is at 55% is a sad testiment for this country. That means that 45% of the people of this country feel he is not representing them. So I guess you are for Cap and Trade, for the Internet Security Bill, for his close relations with Acorn, for his destruction of the manned space program. I can go on, actually the list is quite long. Saying he is better than Bush is like saying you'd rather drown than be burned to death. Either way the American people will lose. You like Obama that's fine with me but don't throw that stuff about where was I when our troops were fighting and dying in the Middle East. I was voicing my disapproval long before that. And quite frankly a soldiers job is to risk his or her life. And it's our job to see that they don't risk it needlessly. A job multiple administrations both Democrat and republican, have failed to do. And you are just as responsible as the rest of us because we elected them.

First-Term Averages

I'll post this just to illustrate the significance of those numbers you are clinging as a glowing validation as to popularity with the populace.
So given your logic most of our Presidents through recent history represented that same "sad testament" you refer to. Perspective is a large percent of one's reality. Clearly we hold much different perspectives on this one. As I said on Saturday via email we will have to agree to disagree here. I will hold just as firmly to my convictions as you will to yours. However I will gravitate towards truth and reality in rendering my beliefs towards those convictions.

Truth is truth and is eventually validated by history. Obama will be a one term president and end up in the same boat as Carter. After three more years I hope you feel the same way. The elections in November will place the country in political grid lock and the only people you can thank are Obama, Reid and Pelosi. And you didn't answer my question regarding his wonderful proposals.

March 2, 2010 at 12:56 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

First the answer to your questions; I am still researching on the first two and therefore will not render a completely uniformed opinion. As you know about me, my decisions are not based on what I am told but rather a conclusion of intense research from all avenues available to me. Regarding Acorn, SEVERAL of our political representatives in many roles of government have had "close ties" to them in the past. I don't know the President-elect ties were any closer than anyone else's in utilizing their services towards voter registrations. If you have concrete proof of such and not heresay, do share it with me please.
As to gridlock, in November you say? Given what I see with my own eyes gridlock has been the goal since January 20th 2010. If one party is opposing ANYTHING that is being proposed and I do mean ANYTHING, what would you call that? The goal is already gridlock and I won't blame the people who are attempting to bring all parties into the discussions related to the issues for being at fault. Again, it's all in perspective.

Deborah: you are missing a few kew points. Obama's approval ratings are the lowest ever for a president at this point in his presidencey. He has almost lost his entire support among independents which is what got him elected in the first place.

Second of all, there should have been absolutely no gridlock at all prior to the Massachusettes election. He had a super majority in the Senate and a large majority in the House. The problem is that he could not get the moderate wing of his party (God Bless Them) to vote on any of his radical agenda, including, Cap and Trade (which is now being proven a scientific unnecessary) and Health Care. The moderate wing of the Democratic Party is what is saving the country right now.

Frank;
Statements such as you made regarding his approval rating at this place in his tenure or what voters are becoming disenchanted really is irrelevant. Not for many years has a President walked in with such a burdensome agenda list of items to address. I would expect some waning of support just based on the issues that had to be dealt with almost retroactively. I'd say with all that mess to juggle 55% is pretty impressive. In spite of all the crap, (there's no better word for it all) that has taken place, the majority of respondents are still in his corner.
As far as Cap and Trade is concerned there are two scientific schools of thought on that subject and whichever helps one to maintain their own slant is the one they will ascribe to. That's the long and short of it.

For clarification, I do not see this President as the second coming or the solution to all of our problems. Nor do I view him as one void of shortcomings. I do recognize he was the man elected by a majority and therefore is charged with the benefits as well as the responsibilities of that office. I remain hopeful that all of our politicians can remove their over-inflated egos out of their anal areas, ALL OF THEM, and get back to the business of running this country effectively and efficiently.
Anything beyond all that is merely semantics and not my focus right now.

Apologies Frank;
I failed to address your point on the moderate democrats. Here's the way I see a lot that is going on right now. The political climate is very unstable and unsure. I would love to think those moderates are taking their legislative stance because they believe it's the right thing to do for the country. On the contrary my gut tells me they think it's a less troublesome stance to take for their re-election efforts.

Lemmings

What the aberration here is, is the fact that the authors of this blog have demonstrate a brilliant command of the issues they attack. But almost all of these blogs could have been written by the same person. There is not any self opposition, another view, critical observations, or a devils advocate.

The blog on Lemmings might have been a parody on this very blog site. We are talking about a species of rodent, who have amongst their sub intellectual characteristics, the habit of marching over cliffs (of critical thinking) and into traps (of false ideologies).

This in no way is meant to demean the authors, commentators or anonymous contributors but what exactly did he have in mind when he wrote this blog and why did not anyone question his motives, meaning or implications. Well, someone did, it caused numerous comments, but those on the team saw no red flags.

You folks, God love you, operate in a Group think tank. Analyze your comments. It s mostly about adulation, praise and self inflicted ego trips. One particular set of comments nailed it, and they in no way detracted from your message. The comment of consequence was ‘When two people always agree (or gang up on the opposition) only one of them is doing all of the thinking.” The other slippery slop of declining intellect is framed by “Great minds talk about ideas, small minds talk about people.”

Gentlemen, if you want to expand the purpose, improve on the mission and goal of your blog and test the envelop of critical thinking, invite Deborah A Cook to be an at-large contributor. She is more than a match for the issues in question. And she certainly articulates the opposition well.

She was invited and did contribute several times but eventually declined to participate any longer due to personal reasons. Anonymous, thank you very much for your kind and praiseful words. I speak from my heart always here as in real-life conversations. I don't shirk from controversy as much as I decide if there are open ears to listen. I learned a long time ago that if I am dealing with a brick wall my energies might be better spent watching paint dry. We all have a little "brick wall" in us, some won't be moved by a Mack truck. After reading your words I may decide to offer more commentary on some of the submissions offered here. They may not cause one person to think differently on the topic matter but I will have felt better knowing I spoke my truth.
Thank you again.
