Business as Usual by Ira Scwartz
There was a reason for this. Our founders knew it would take the country as a whole, working together, to achieve the impossible; to achieve the birth of a new nation. But sadly the fire that propelled our forefathers to greatness seems to have long since burned out. Today our political leaders seem to be more interested in pushing their own agenda or working to get re-elected then actually doing what they were elected to do, represent the people.
It is not all their fault; we the people must take most of the blame. Our complacency over the years has allowed this to happen. In the absence of directions from us, they, like unsupervised children, have gone off on their own. When questioned, they tell us not to worry, they know what is best. Then they smile condescendingly, pat us on the head and plod forward, barely breaking stride as they continue preaching the same rhetoric. The political tabloids and so called news programs joke, “its politics as usual in Washington.” But you know what…that’s not funny anymore.
This country was founded “by the people and for the people” and we the people need to remember that. Each and every one of us is responsible for what this great country of ours says and does. After all we elected these people to speak on our behalf, trusted them to look after our concerns. So how do we get our country’s leaders to listen? It’s really very simple. All of us need to start paying attention again; to get involved again. All of us need to stop thinking of ourselves as red states or blue states, Democrats or Republicans, liberals or conservatives and start thinking of ourselves as Americans.
All of us need to get to know our representatives, check their legislative history, and see what they’ve been doing in our names. If we’re not happy with the way they’ve been representing us we need to let them know it. If they don’t listen we need to replace them with someone who will. The power has always been in our hands, all of us just need the will to use it. We need to reignite in all of us that spark our founding fathers knew so well. To participate as one in the journey forward our nation is taking in this new century. Then, and only then, can we all tell our leaders that “business as usual in Washington” is no longer acceptable.

Couldn't have said it better myself. It's time to sweep these folks out of D.C. and replace them with people who actually care about us. As stated, "We the people..." not 'we the bureaucrats'.
Great article Ira!!
I have been saying this for years and no one wanted to listen. The sad facts are our government is primarily interested in the following:
1) Unlimited spending
2) Making sure taxes are high enough to promote Unlimited Spending
3)Promoting their own party even when that means not listening to and or not caring what is best for the people. The answer...Unlimited Spending
4) And the beat goes on...

Right on Bruce. It's time to wake up America...before it's too late.
You know Bruce unfortunitly you're right. But I've discovered one voice in a sea of noise is never really heard but a multitude of voice force people to listen. We need to become a multitude of voices. Then we need to hit them where it hurts...in their wallets.
Teach me how the flush the all mighty toilet of politicians and I will grasp the handle with both pride and joy!
Let's make some noise!

Will written Ira because of this blog I have started writeing my congrassmen with my opinions and letting him know what we the people want. I hope this little bit on info by you gets around.
This would be very true, Ira, if the United States of America was still a democracy.
Unfortunately, it has become what I'd call a "corporatocracy" wherein the companies now control the government. What we really need to take back America are several initiatives:
First, REAL campaign reform. Lobbying needs to be made illegal, so that citizens have EQUAL access to government. When corporations make huge contributions to political coffers, then those politicians become beholden to corporations and that can never be good for "the people".
Secondly, we need to force term limits to be imposed across the board. Our founding fathers saw politics as a voluntary service to country, not as a career. Career politicians seem to simply find new and better ways to work the system, whether it be via pork barrel politics or catering to the wealthiest constituents.
Lastly, we need to get big business out of government and government out of big business. If the latest financial meltdown has taught us anything, it should be that in a free market economy there is no such thing as "too big to fail".
